Formula provide professional driving instruction for Learner and Restricted drivers aiming for their Full licences, professional drivers wanting to enhance their skills and abilities, and those just wanting to be more competent drivers.
We appreciate the independence that comes with having a Restricted Licence, and ultimately a Full Licence. But we also know that driving a tonne or more of metal, rubber and plastic around at speed is serious business. That’s why, at Formula, our instructors teach the skills and knowledge drivers need to stay safe, responsible and confident on New Zealand’s roads.

Parents: What you need to know!
At Formula, not only do we pride ourselves on making sure young people pass their Restricted and Full Licence tests, but that they are also as prepared as possible to drive safely, responsibly and with confidence on New Zealand’s roads. In other words, as a parent, you can have peace of mind when you choose Formula to teach your son or daughter to drive. We’ll do everything in our power to make sure they’re fully prepared and if they’re not, we’ll let you and them know.
The Junior Learner package is for new drivers who have passed their Learner Licence theory test. The lessons within this package are designed to guide you and your driving to the next level. Over seven lessons your Formula instructor will teach and help you refine the skills, knowledge and attitude required to pass your practical Restricted Licence driving test. Your first lesson will involve a comprehensive initial assessment to ascertain your existing understanding and abilities. Then, each subsequent lesson will be based on your previous lesson and other driving practice in between (with family or friends). *Lessons must be pre-paid before commencement. Lessons can be paid individually and are GST inclusive. Disclaimer: Our aim is to make you a safe and confident driver and we appreciate that every driver is different. Therefore, after your initial assessment or at some point during your seven lessons it may be you require additional lessons prior to sitting your Restricted Licence test. The Intermediate Learner package is for the learner driver that has their L-plates on and has been having some form of practice elsewhere but now requires professional driving instruction to take them through to their Restricted Licence test. The five-lesson package includes initial assessment, then a series of lessons to refine skills, knowledge and attitude, before a final lesson, which effectively concludes and prepares you to sit your practical Restricted Licence test. *Lessons must be pre-paid before commencement. Lessons can be paid individually and are GST inclusive. Disclaimer: Our aim is to make you a safe and confident driver and we appreciate that every driver is different. Therefore, after your initial assessment or at some point during your five lessons it may be you require additional lessons prior to sitting your Restricted Licence test. The Advanced Learner package is for those who feel they’re almost ready to sit their Restricted or Full Licence test. Your first lesson will include an initial assessment to ascertain your driving level. Then, your second lesson will refine your driving skills across the board, with your third lesson acting as the final preparation for your Restricted Licence test. *Lessons must be pre-paid before commencement. Lessons can be paid individually and are GST inclusive. Casual Lessons can be fully tailored to your requirements and are ideal for those who wish to improve their driving skills or wish to be fully assessed before sitting a Restricted/Full practical test. *Casual lesson fees are payable prior to the commencement of lessons. For those driving with Full (Class 1) Licences as part of their job, our Professional Driver lessons will help enhance your existing driving skill-set to become a more critical, self-aware and professional driver. Licences
Learner Licence
After you’ve passed your official NZTA Learner (theory) test you’re legally allowed to drive on New Zealand’s public roads accompanied by a fully licensed driver, such as a Formula driving instructor. This phase of your driving life is one of the most important times to get instruction from a qualified instructor prior to sitting your Restricted Licence test. To obtain a Learners Licence you must be at least 16 years of age and once obtained you must hold this licence for at least six months before attempting to sit your practical Restricted Licence test.

Once you’ve landed your Learner Licence and have been receiving driving lessons from Formula, you’ll reach a point where you’re ready to sit your Restricted Licence test. This phase is actually the most important time to start or continue instruction from a qualified instructor as statistics show you are far more likely to crash on your Restricted Licence than on a Learner Licence or at any other time in your driving life. To qualify for a Restricted Licence you must be at least 16.5 years of age and once gained this licence must be held for at least 18 months before applying for a Full Licence. (see below*)

Failing Restricted Licence Tests
Many Learner drivers fail their Restricted Licence test due to bad habits, skills or attitudes passed on from parents, family or friends who have been teaching them to drive. Getting lessons from qualified driving instructors greatly reduces the chances of test failures by instilling the correct habits, skills and attitudes necessary to be safe, confident and responsible drivers.
NZTA recommends 120 hours’ driving on a Learner Licence before sitting the Restricted Licence test. At Formula we believe this amount of driving allows you the time to master the driving skills and knowledge you need to pass the test the first time, saving you money and disappointment, so you can get on the road and enjoy the immense independence driving brings.
Full Licence
After driving on your Restricted Licence for 18 months you are eligible to sit a 30-minute practical test to obtain your Full Licence. *Or, if you’ve completed an Advanced Driving Course, you can sit your Full Licence after 12 months, at the earliest age of 17.5 years. Once you’ve passed the Full Licence test, your don’t have to follow the Restricted Licence conditions anymore. You can drive any vehicle covered under Class 1 anywhere you like, any time of the day, with passengers!
